Hello sports, goodbye to you. Here we are at another World Series. In the news there’s been reports of fans being beaten in parking lots before the games, while they were supposed to be enjoying themselves at tailgate parties. The beatings are the result of being attached to one team or the other.
It’s the competitive thinking that, “My team is better than your team.” And, “I’ll do everything I can to prove it to you,” even before the game has started. These feelings and attractions you have toward “your team” are ways of fulfilling your life by living through someone else’s, like the team’s life.
This team becomes your surrogate family that you will fight to the death to defend. You get together each weekend on site, or at a sports bar, or even your home to pay homage to your team. It’s a celebration with much food and alcohol. It’s exactly what the Romans did in the Coliseum.
A long time ago the powers that rule discovered that if you can distract the masses with games and wine you can control them. In modern times you are being controlled by not only getting together to celebrate your team, but you are also bombarded with commercials that let you know that you are lacking in all the things advertised. They tell you what you must have in order to be worthy of your team.
You need to have a new car or truck, new clothes, more insurance, you must drink this or that premium brand. You must eat in certain restaurants. You have to take vacations or even trips to see your team play in other locations. You must buy team apparel to show your loyalty and of course you need to get more credit cards so you can get all this stuff.
So, while you think you are doing something fun and harmless by getting together to support your team, what you are really doing is exposing yourself to more intense programming that takes you further away from discovering who you really are and what you really need to be doing each weekend.
