What people will have to be concerned with regarding technology, now and in the future, is state-of-the-art technology being developed by hackers.
Recently, hackers demonstrated how they could send a text message to a Corvette’s computers and shut off the brakes. It was a simple attack on what manufacturers thought was a secure system. If hackers could send a text message and shut off the brakes what else can they do? What about shutting off someone’s engine while they were driving on the expressway? What about causing their entire electrical system to fail on command?
Another hacker developed a $30 device that intercepts people’s key code to their cars and to their garage door openers. It works by the hacker placing the device within radio range of a person’s garage or parking spot. When the person pushes their key fob to open their car doors it doesn’t work on the first try because the device intercepted the code and stored it in the device. It works on the second try so the owner gives it no thought. It works the same way opening the garage door. I didn’t open the first time but worked the second time, the owner thinks nothing of it and assumes it must have been a glitch of some kind or weak batteries. Then the hacker goes back and picks up the device they planted and now has the codes to get into your garage and open your car, all without setting off your alarm. Hackers are working on being able to start the car and the hacker will drive away.
This is the next generation of car thieves. No more breaking windows and hot wiring cars when you can just intercept codes, open the garage, start the car and drive away. This will make the older model cars much more popular.
